Silver Swan

This song’s going on 32 years old…
Some 12 years older than I was when I wrote it!!

I borrowed the title from one of my favourite madrigals, The Silver Swan by Orlando Gibbons:

“The silver swan who living hath no note, when death approached, unlocked her silent throat. Leaning her breast against the reedy shore, thus sang her first and last: and sang no more.”

Anyway, back in 1983, I was going to be a rock star, obviously, and the lady was going to be a famous actress, and we were going to be FABULOUS, darlings… And, at the time, she was insisting that she wasn’t going past 21 years old if she hadn’t become famous by then… I put two and two together and came up with this.

The song’s been sitting somewhere in the middle of my “maybe” pile for a couple of years now. A few weeks back, when I discovered that it’s someone’s 50th birthday soon, I thought “well, I’d better do this one next, then…”

Silver Swan - A A J Russe

A pretty little lady wants to ride the silver breeze
Let’s build her some wings to help her fly
She knows that she’ll make it
If she don’t she knows she’ll die
I’m sending all my luck to the silver swan

Lonely as she is nobody can get near
They’ll just get in the way and waste her time
The only one I know who ever did get close
Is busy somewhere else just drinking wine

Silver swan don’t let up if it takes too long
Don’t save your song for your dying breath
Silver swan come on and sing for me now
Don’t use your last weapon yet

Your mamma says you’re dreaming
Trying to catch the wind
She’s gonna be lonely when you’ve flown the nest
You don’t trust no-one
I can’t believe you’ve never loved
You can’t expect us to pass your test

No-one’s gonna beat you or take the lead from you
The days that you’re weak have got long to come
I’m fighting for myself and though my road is just as hard
My heart flies high with the silver swan

Silver swan don’t let up if it takes too long
Don’t save your song for your dying breath
Silver swan come on and sing for me now
Don’t use your last weapon yet

It's no good Andrew, your music reminds me so much of Family, I absolutely love it. Having seen them so many times, I'm sorry to say, I'm off to Youtube to catch up on some Chapo ..... but like a good groupie, I'll come back to you. ( hope this don't make tongues wag )
